Propping Works - Install Slappings within Historically Listed Building
BAM Construction approached GCM to undertake significant propping works to allow slapping installation across the historically listed Perth City Hall. The purpose of the works was to allow the historical building to be brought a new lease of life and allow the building to be re-purposed for use in the 21st century.
With over 50 slappings to be installed across the site, careful planning and co-ordination of the works was essential. Openings to be formed directly above/below each other required the installation sequence to be carefully planned to avoid structural issues with the fragile and historical building. Close liaison with the client was also essential due to other site works occurring.
Each slapping formed a separate design which was controlled by GCMs in house Temporary Works Co-Ordinator. The TWCs role included ensuring the design and checking process was in place prior to releasing works permits.
Following the temporary works design and sequencing, bespoke propping systems were installed. The openings required coring through 400mm to 900m thick walls and erection of needles through these to provide the support via the propping system. The installation of the needles and propping system were all carried out by GCMs specialist team.
Once the propping system was installed and signed off by the TWC, the installation of the lintels could be made and only after could the openings be formed.
The site was transformed and the building successfully opened up to allow the new layout to be created. The sequencing of the works allowed the structural integrity of the historically listed building to be maintained, whilst creating a new space for the 21st century.
