On completion of the superstructure demolition it was identified that asbestos cement material had been buried below the former factory unit. The asbestos material was bonded to the underside of the floor slab and buried at various locations on the site.
GCM were required to safely decontaminate the asbestos material and remove it from site.
Our project was resourced and controlled from our Head Office in Falkirk, deploying to site a full time asbestos site manager, asbestos personnel and asbestos trained machine operatives.
Initially the site was cordoned off with a water suppression system established to constantly wet the area suppressing any potential airborne fibres. A UKAS independent asbestos analyst was also deployed to apply initial assessment and daily monitoring. Our proposed works were notified to the HSE along with our proposed methodology prior to decontamination works commencing.
Each identified 10m² grid section was excavated by hand with the assistance of a GCM excavator, with all arising material loaded into roll on–roll off skips which were removed from site under a pre-notification to SEPA to an asbestos licensed facility.
