Location: Vynova, Runcorn
We were required to carefully dismantle and remove the 57m vent stack structure and vent line from within the live operational chemical manufacturing complex. The structure was located within a new construction area which included the construction of a new ethylene dichloride plant and vent line structure.
Following a detailed site survey by our engineers, a structural assessment was undertaken to design a suitable temporary work solution to enable the existing steel structure to be strengthened and dismantled in sections.
We then developed a site lifting plan which would have minimal impact on the operation of the new construction project and the existing live process plant operations.
A specialist rope access sub-contractor was employed to install the temporary bracing at pre-determined positions in accordance with the structural design and specific lift plan. The location of the structure and existing site constraints dictated that a 500-tonne telescopic lifting crane was required to lift the structural sections to grade level.
An MK 140 tower crane equipped with a personnel basket was used to provide operator access for cutting and slinging of the stack structure sections. The individual sectional cut points were clearly marked, then each section cut to size and lifted to grade utilising the mobile telescopic crane.
The works were closely coordinated by GCM and the client's operational/project team. The overall program was successfully completed one week ahead of the project schedule. On completion of works all necessary temporary protection and equipment were removed and the site left to the satisfaction of the client’s engineering and construction team.
